Commonly Asked Dermatology Questions

There is a lot to discuss when a pet suffers from a skin condition. It is very important to understand every aspect of their life and make recommendations based on their individual needs; this is very time consuming and certainly more information than can be processed in a standard consultation. Many pets will suffer from skin conditions for their whole life making it so important to get the best advice right from the beginning.

There are a wide range of skin conditions in cats and dogs. Below are some of the common reasons for a visit

  • Scratching
  • Hair loss
  • Red, inflamed skin
  • Head shaking
  • Sore ears
  • Scabs, sores and scales
  • Over grooming
  •

There are many different possible causes for these symptoms some of which are:

  • Allergies (environmental and food)
  • Infections
  • Parasites
  • Auto immune conditions
  • Endocrine conditions for example hypothyroidism and cushings
  • Neoplasia
  • Hormonal

We typically recommend booking this type of consultation wen your pet has been suffering from a skin complaint for more than 3 months. This includes those pets suffering from ongoing or intermittent ear infections.

An initial dermatology consultation costs £150 and lasts for 45 minutes. Follow up consultations last for up to 30 minutes and cost £100. On-going consultations can then often be charged at the normal rate of £60 for 15 minutes.

The cost of the consultation includes in depth history taking, clinical examination, discussion around treatment and, following the consult, a written report.

Depending on our pet’s complaint it may be advised to do some testing of the skin or ears. Typically, these tests cost £78-150 per test. The final cost will also depend on the treatment recommended, this will be discussed and agreed with you during the consultation or after the report recommendations have been sent to you.

Prices correct as of June 2025.
